Johnny is an emotionally stunted and softspoken radio journalist who travels the country interviewing a variety of kids about their thoughts concerning their world and their future. Then Johnny's saddled with caring for his young nephew Jesse. Jesse brings a new perspective and, as they travel from state to state, effectively turns the emotional tables on Johnny.

User Review

A new film has been released by director Mike Mills, who makes far too few movies. His films *Women of the 20th Century* and *Beginners* possess a unique energy and charm, telling small, deeply personal stories that strike a chord right in the heart.

“Come On, Come On” follows radio journalist Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) as he interviews children across America. When his sister asks him to look after her son, Jesse, they set off on a road trip across the country, trying to get along and find common ground.

This story, simple at first glance, attempts to explore complex and existential questions of happiness and sadness through a child’s eyes. The child’s genuine curiosity, sincerity, and boundless energy serve as a counterbalance to the weary, withdrawn, and confused Johnny.

Both of them are trying to come to terms with the burdens of the present and the past, each in his own way. Because of his age, Jesse is unable to work through his problems, so he resorts to methods that, at first glance, seem strange and eccentric—though they aren’t as obviously annoying as they might seem.

Phoenix’s character, in turn, is in a state of turmoil: he has been away from his sister for a long time, has gone through a breakup, and now has to take care of a child when he can’t even take care of himself.

Thanks to his nephew’s strange and offbeat questions, Johnny is finally able to take a fresh look at his life and find a bit of peace. Phoenix’s character learns to listen, to be honest with himself, and, in fact, to be a father. It’s an excellent guide on how to communicate with your child and what it means to be a parent.

Mike Mills essentially based the film on the principle that “the truth comes from the mouth of a child.” Children are free from cynicism, prejudice, and any preconceived notions. They say everything they think and feel. They immediately sense lies on a subconscious level and understand when they aren’t being taken seriously. The director gives children a voice, posing the adult questions that trouble each of us.

This is a tender, beautiful, and very honest story that sentimentally—and perhaps naively—believes in the future, yet fully understands that it simply won’t happen. It is this genuine faith and love for people that evokes truly powerful emotions. It’s a vivid, authentic, and incredibly natural film that ventures into the realm of documentary.

The film is both stunning and simply shot. The black-and-white imagery evokes the cinema of the last century, creating a bridge between the past and the present.

This is a film about the perception of time, which sometimes moves so imperceptibly fast that the details of life are simply erased from memory. “Come On, Come On” tries to remind us that our time on this earth is brief, so we must strive to better ourselves, move forward, let go of the past, listen to one another, and—most importantly—not be afraid to feel.

Mike Mills has directed an incredibly touching story about life in the present—a life that can be incredibly scary and complicated, but worth every minute.
