Of course, these days it’s hard to surprise a discerning viewer—which is what I consider myself to be. After all, following countless films about exorcism, possession, and other adventures of the devil taking over bodies, it’s hard to come up with anything new.

However! We have a fatherless family—a mother and her two children—who come to Spain. There, they inherit a church—a bit of a stroke of luck, of course. The mother wanted to renovate it, restore it, sell it, and return home, but evil crept out from the cracks. The young priest didn’t sit well with the demon, so the demon had the Pope’s chief exorcist shipped in from Italy. The devil isn’t a fool, of course. And so the fun began.

Aside from the poor kid’s excellent acting, I also loved the plot twist that weaves demons into history—which is what I love most of all. An alternative version of history, filled with something like that—it’s my weakness. That’s how my *Possession* was born, actually. And, by the way, I discovered a funny coincidence.

I never really liked Russell Crowe; he used to strike me as an uninteresting actor, and *Gladiator* seemed like just another movie. But after *Les Misérables*, I started seeing him in a different light. And now I really enjoyed his performance. Just like everyone else’s. The plot is good, too—with its own unique twist.

To sum it up: I recommend it. It’s a good one to watch in the evening, with the lights off. There aren’t any typical jump scares, but the more sensitive among you might flinch a couple of times.
