User Review
Lucio Fulci had already tackled the theme of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat.” That was, of course, a very loose interpretation, but “Seven Notes in the Dark” stands on its own, even though it is peppered with references to Poe’s work.
Formally, the film *The Black Cat* was supposed to adhere more closely to the great writer’s story. But Fulci decided to do things his own way and created yet another version of the work.
This is perhaps the first film adaptation of this story in which the cat itself takes center stage. The cat, in fact, was the lead performer. Fulci beautifully portrayed the graceful animal, though his somewhat dry style was evident. Many scenes could have been more impactful.
The film balances between mystery and giallo. The investigation into a series of gruesome murders leads us to a sorcerer and a black cat. It’s no longer clear who is using whom as a tool. And it doesn’t really matter. Mimsy Farmer, however, cuts a very dignified figure in the film.
Incidentally, Fulci would say in an interview that David Warbeck was cast because of his resemblance to Jack Nicholson. Anthropologically speaking, the actors may look alike, but Warbeck completely lacks that strange charm of Nicholson’s that led to his success. On the other hand, Warbeck is quite manly.
