As a child, Billy witnessed an unknown man dressed as Santa Claus murder his parents. Years later, his memories turn into an obsession: donning a red suit, he begins to carry out bloody revenge himself. His path is a chain of murders on the eve of Christmas, where every “offender” faces cruel retribution, and the festive image of Santa becomes a symbol of horror.

Looking at the faces of the two main stars of the new film from the studio that brought you “The Terrible 3” (the poster and trailer scream about it), we couldn't remember where we had seen Roen Campbell and Ruby Modine or Modine before. We couldn't recall their previous roles, so when we checked their filmographies, we immediately exclaimed, just like Karl Urban and John Cho did in response to the host's statement about the bed and five guys. The young actor from Canada was memorable for his relatively recent role in Osgood Perkins' Monkey, while the daughter of famous actor Matthew Modine or Modine played a key role in Happy Death Day a long time ago! They are clearly not the most popular performers, but that made the film all the more interesting to watch, as they clearly had great chemistry on screen.

In general, the trailers and advertising present “Silent Night, Deadly Night” as a kind of relative of the already cult “Terrifying,” a trilogy that is one of the best films of 2024 and the entire 21st century for us. Although after watching it, you will realize that the only thing that connects the two projects is the signature squelching sound when the main characters kill human beings with various sharp objects. Okay, there's also the common Christmas setting. But otherwise, this is a story about a guy who, before the main American holiday, has to spend 24 days committing violence, successfully hiding, disguising himself, and moving from city to city for the sake of his mission. The guy has one specific feature. Should I write about it here?

Actually, that might be a spoiler, so it's better to go to the cinema to find out for yourself. This feature is very useful, convenient, and, most importantly, appropriate. If we were to fantasize, we certainly wouldn't refuse to have it ourselves. Without it, the main character would hardly have survived the terrible tragedy of his parents' murder, as described in the film's synopsis. The trailer also emphasizes who was obedient and who was mischievous over the past year. The mischievous ones will get what they deserve, and Mike P. Nelson and the screenwriters will be sure to explain why they receive their deserved punishment. This also resonated with me, because in moments of acute justice, you sometimes think how great it would be to punish the bad guys.

After all, various crime stories inevitably seep into our information field. When we hear or see that another criminal who should be punished for his crimes is avoiding prison, buying his way out, or threatening his victim thanks to his connections, we want there to be a secret avenger in the city who would judge moral monsters according to his own code. And you don't need a Batman costume, Santa Claus is enough. We admit that the first half of the film looked interesting, but it was still a bit boring when the plot began to expand with characters and new storylines, so we dozed off a little then. But then we woke up when we realized that a separate love story was cleverly woven into the script. It whispered loudly that even if someone was a “psycho,” there would be a separate “psycho” for them.

It was so touching, sweet, and visually romantic that we had no doubt: “Silent Night, Holy Night” definitely hooked us. And the violence, cruelty, and murders are just like sweet fresh fruit decorating a delicate cheesecake. So the film quite successfully combines the aesthetics of rom-coms, “The Terrifying,” “The Black Phone,” and even... “Venom”! See for yourself - you'll understand. The actors and actresses are great, cute. The director's work itself is decent, it doesn't look cheap and crappy. The music is intriguing and frightening. Finally, there is the main character's peculiarity, which does not give him peace. Life would be much simpler and easier if, of course, we accepted it and did not push it away. By the way, I have never seen the original from 40 years ago. And I doubt I will want to now.
