Director Mike Mills has dedicated an entire trilogy to his relatives: to his mother—"Women of the 20th Century"; to his son—the recent "Come On, Come On"; and it all began with "Beginners"—a film that tells the story of the director’s father’s extraordinary life. After the death of Mike’s wife and mother, he came out and lived with a man for several years, until his death. For his role as Hal, the incomparable Christopher Plummer won the only Oscar of his career.
The simple yet uplifting idea that it’s never too late to be a beginner—in work, relationships, or creativity—became the film’s central theme. Unlike most of the films in this selection, this autobiographical film does not claim to be a coming-of-age story, but it shows that it is possible to remain adaptable at any age, regardless of circumstances that sometimes become defining. Mills meticulously reconstructs the context of these changes—dates, weather, and the overall atmosphere of the era: the director attempts to view the world through the eyes of those who lived through these events.
User Review
A movie about a nice but somewhat boring guy who falls in love with a quirky, beautiful girl with a foul mouth, and is waiting for his father—who has come out as gay and is battling cancer—to die. The film is filled with Dalai Lama-esque quotes about life, interesting historical flashbacks presented as slide shows that reveal the characters’ pasts, and somewhat tedious dialogue. From time to time, the characters have fun in sweet and inventive ways. There are absolutely no bad people in the film. And the whole premise is transparent, clichéd, and fatalistic. Everything always comes to an end at some point, and something new always begins. You have to understand this, accept it, and not be a fool.
Overall, the film leaves a pleasant but somewhat hollow impression. The characters are likable. The acting, cinematography, and so on all look good. There are no internal conflicts as such in the film, which is why it lacks tension and drama.
A lighthearted, autobiographical tribute from the director to his father.
Of course, the movie isn’t bad, but it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. It’s perfect for a melancholic mood.
