Circumstances dictate that Jesse must urgently flee Las Vegas. This impulsive young man is not accustomed to living by the law. He steals a car, and on his way to Los Angeles, he is forced to shoot a police officer. As he approaches the city, his situation becomes increasingly dire. It seems as if the whole world is against him. But, strangely enough, it is at this moment that he meets a girl who makes his heart race wildly and then freeze with the intensity of his feelings. He has been waiting for this girl his whole life. But now, with the entire state police force hunting him, he has other things to think about.

I don't know why everyone starts with the word “remake” when talking about this film. I've seen Godard's “original,” if I may call it that, many times. But it only vaguely resembles this purely American film. Here, everything is more American, more magical, more passionate. Unlike its measured, black-and-white French counterpart, the film sparkles with bright colors, fiery rock ‘n’ roll music, and a frantic narrative rhythm. There are also plenty of bedroom scenes, which give the film a slightly entertaining melodramatic tone. It transforms from a real crime drama into a light “Hollywood candy.” This is facilitated by the music video-like filming style, with rich colors splashing right off the screen. It is clear that the director took care of the aesthetic side of this film. Beauty is the first word that comes to mind. Everything here is beautiful—the main characters, the actors playing them, the filming, the nature, the bed scenes. Therefore, the film can definitely be watched in one sitting, and it is clearly not the last. What distinguishes this film from the original is its somewhat open ending.
- “Tare” means abnormal!
And then there are the actors. Richard Gere and Valérie Capriski are both young, beautiful, and sexy, and that is their main asset. After the films American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman, Richard Gere was at the height of his career. He successfully exploited the image of a daredevil and macho man. His character doesn't care about tomorrow, he lives only for today and doesn't think about anything. The only thing he truly cares about is the beautiful Frenchwoman Monica, whom he met in Las Vegas. Obsessed with the dream of leaving with her for Mexico, Jesse lives life at a frantic pace, never looking back and enjoying every minute, as if sensing that it will all be short-lived. Apparently, to give the film a French flavor, the creators invited actress Valérie Capriski to play the lead role. It must be said that she fits perfectly into this picture, effortlessly playing the role of a sensual French student. In her homeland, the young beauty often graced the covers of erotic magazines. Perhaps that is why the directors mainly exploited her magnificent appearance. This was especially true in films such as The Year of the Jellyfish, Aphrodite, and Public Woman.
“Only a fool would stay when he could run away...”
American director Jim McBride very elegantly links what is happening on screen to other works of popular art. The hero constantly quotes comics about the Silver Surfer, the lovers hide in the mansion where the famous Hollywood actor Errol Flynn used to live, and the final bed scene takes place in a cinema against the backdrop of the classic noir film ' The Gun Crazy, and the episodic role of Professor Budro is played by the renowned French director, artist, and screenwriter Eugène Lurier, who also worked on Jean Renoir's films. And as the main reference to the original, the surname of the main character (who was transformed into a charming Frenchwoman) is the same as that of Belmondo's character in Godard's film. I would also add that this film features a lot of great rock ‘n’ roll music, huge American convertibles, and popular comics. Incidentally, this film is one of Quentin Tarantino's favorites. It was from here that he took the song “Jack The Ripper” by Link Wray and Ray Men and made it famous years later in his sensational Pulp Fiction...
