An inspiring story about the charismatic leader of a baseball team, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), who, despite financial difficulties, builds a successful team using highly unconventional methods…

User Review

Someone once recommended the movie *Moneyball* to me as a way to fall asleep. But it turned out to be the exact opposite. As someone who spends hours staring at the stats in *Football Manager*, I was hooked from the very first frames. And now I rewatch this movie with the same enthusiasm every year.

Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill are a duo here that never misses a beat. Brad Pitt is Brad Pitt. He’s always cool—no wonder he looks so much like Ilya Maddison. Pitt is magnificent in his restraint, in the inner turmoil of a manager who’s either rowing against the system or rowing the system (whichever you prefer). Jonah Hill is here and everywhere—a true king of supporting roles. In every film, he’s different, unpredictable, as if he’s not playing a character but a new facet of himself. I sort of get what Katya Kishchuk means.

And of course, Philip Seymour Hoffman deserves a mention. He plays a coach who is fed unsolicited advice and strange strategies from above, as well as written-off players—he evokes both irritation and respect at the same time. His performance conveys the genuine pain of a professional whose life forces him to adapt to someone else’s rules.

The plot itself is almost a philosophy of faith in the power of data. The illusion that perfect Excel spreadsheets can turn the chaos of baseball into an exact science is incredibly alluring. And it is precisely because the characters don’t make it to the championship that the film becomes more powerful—more tragic, more human, more relatable. Because even in a world built on statistics, there will always be room for chance

At the same time, baseball is just the backdrop here. And that’s wonderful, because this sport was created solely to show commercials during breaks. And there are exactly as many breaks as needed to show 800,000 commercials.

The only thing that drives me crazy is the storyline involving his ex-family. It’s not that it gets in the way, but it feels out of place in a story where everything else is perfectly focused on professional obsession. Without it, the film wouldn’t lose a single ounce of its power.
