Freddy is dead, and that's final. In the fifth installment of Nightmare, he was killed off for good. And we'll forgive the release of the sixth film and turn a blind eye to it. But Wes Craven wouldn't be Wes Craven if he didn't end the series of films about Freddy himself. Yes, there is Freddy vs. Jason, but that doesn't count. I'm talking specifically about the saga with the grand title A Nightmare on Elm Street.
It all started with the nightmares that haunted the son of Heather Langenkamp, the actress who played Nancy in the first Nightmare. Dylan claims to see a man with claws in his dreams. Heather doesn't believe him, but circumstances force her to believe the boy.
An interesting idea, a “film within a film.” Craven wanted to implement it in the third film, but fortunately, it didn't work out, and we got to see a few more films. In this part, Craven pokes fun at everything. At the producers who are eager to crank out any movie in a month just to make a buck. At poor England, who never really got out of the Krueger character. Everything was shown from the perspective of reality, not from the perspective of a dream. We actually saw a story from the “behind the scenes” section.
But behind the scenes, there was even more mysticism than on stage. We learn that Krueger supposedly really exists and is a universal evil from nowhere that seeks out people's fears and exploits them. I won't say what happens next, although I really want to.
I was very pleased with the cast. Heather Langenkamp looks like a grown mother who has long since left the movies behind. She loves her son and husband; she is not the same person we saw in the first part. The viewer clearly sees the line between that Heather and this one. How similar they are in appearance and how different they are in life. It's very nice to see my favorite actress from the first film. I also really liked Robert England, John Saxon, and Wes Craven playing themselves. England portrayed a sensual, kind, and responsive person who loves and cares deeply for his close friends. Saxon was, as always, remarkable. He again played a man beaten down by life, but always in his right mind. Craven is good in the role of himself, a brilliant screenwriter and director, a true master of horror.
This ‘Nightmare’ is scary precisely because of its atmosphere. The boy who played Dylan is magnificent in the role. He screams so wildly when he is awakened that it becomes truly terrifying.
And that's what horror is all about. Freddy Krueger is presented to us here as a cruel bogeyman, an almost silent maniac. He speaks little but does a lot. I love Krueger from the previous films, but in the seventh installment, he just looks different. It's good that Craven can improve on the characters he has created, make changes to them, and not leave them stuck in the same place they were in the previous films.
Wes Craven has once again done a subtle and interesting job. I didn't notice a single flaw in this film; the hand of a master is evident throughout, and it simply must be preserved forever. The hand of a master. Craven's hand or Krueger's glove hand? I think both should be preserved. Thank you for a wonderful franchise, Wes Craven. A big thank you from the bottom of my heart!
