Angela is back, in the form of an angry inner-city camper, on the hunt for blood. Camp New Horizons, on the recycled grounds of the former murders, intends to pair high-class teens with underclass counterparts. Angela, however, has a different plan. Will it be door number one, number two, or number three?

User Review

I’ve outlined the formula for the perfect slasher movie in my reviews more than once, but I won’t hesitate to do so again. Slasher movies aren’t meant to carry any deeper meaning, and their plots don’t have to be particularly original—remember that! The main thing in slasher movies is brutal carnage, rivers of blood, and elaborate murders. Anyone who gives slasher movies low ratings simply because they’re trying to compare them to ordinary films or the same old horror movies has a rather shallow view of this film genre.

From the perspective of my formula for the ideal slasher, the "Sleepaway Camp" trilogy can be rated an 8 with a clear conscience. You might ask, what’s missing from the film? It’s missing blood. Yes, the murders here are quite elaborate; once again, “Friday the 13th” comes to mind—or, more precisely, the methods of that film’s maniac, Jason Voorhees: watching Angela’s imagination run wild is a great pleasure for sadists (for whom, in fact, such films are made). But the main problem with the *"Sleepaway Camp" trilogy is that the murders themselves are hardly shown at all. Or rather, only some of them are shown. Yes, the murders are implied, and we understand what’s happening and how yet another person dies, but the camera cuts away at that moment. This is a huge drawback of the trilogy’s third installment: there’s no realism, and the illusion of plausibility that characterized the previous installment has been completely trampled by the cinematographers here. Or rather, they aren’t even to blame for this. It’s just that the trilogy’s third installment was shot on a shoestring budget, so they couldn’t afford to film realistic murder scenes—there are no special effects to speak of. It’s a shame; with them, “Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland” would have looked much better. Probably because of this failure, the project never made it to a quadrilogy. Or rather, there was a quadrquel. But it was a short film released in 2002. It wasn’t until the late 2000s that *Sleepaway Camp* was revisited, and in 2008 a film was shot that bypassed theaters and was released directly to DVD. I’ll cover that one in a separate review.

Verdict. “Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland” is a fairly brutal slasher with elaborate murders and a charismatic maniac (Pamela Springsteen does an excellent job in her role as a psychopathic killer), but the trilogy lacks authenticity. And it’s all because of a lack of budget. But don’t think the movie is bad. No, it’s really cool. It’s just that it could have been so much better...
