The nightmarish visions of Rebecca's childhood are long gone. She remembers every night spent in the old house as a terrible dream. Now it seems like the product of a vivid imagination, but back then it was frighteningly real—as soon as the lights went out, a terrifying creature would appear, ready to pounce on her. A real challenge to sanity, exhausting insomnia... Fortunately, it all stopped when the family moved.

Years passed, and suddenly Rebecca learns that the same thing is happening to her younger brother. She couldn't understand how this was possible, because she had almost convinced herself that it was all just a strange trick of the mind. It turned out that neither growing up nor a change of scenery had rid them of the creature from the darkness. It seemed like a real family curse. If so, what was the cause? And what kind of demon was hunting them?

In 2013, David F. Sandberg, a director who was not particularly well-known but definitely talented, released a rather intriguing short film called Lights Out. In just three minutes, Sandberg managed to scare even seasoned horror fans, proving that he was capable of making high-quality, spectacular, and suspenseful films without a big budget or big-name stars. After the success of “Lights Out,” Sandberg returned to short films, but his horror experiment did not go unnoticed by major Hollywood studios, which saw considerable potential in the modest film. The producers, led by the well-known James Wan, creator of Insidious and The Conjuring, rightly decided that Lights Out could be turned into a full-length horror film and entrusted its development to David F. Sandberg himself. Sandberg, which is surprising in itself, since the authors of low-budget source material often remain on the sidelines of the further fate of their own brainchild. And now that Lights Out has hit the big screen, it's safe to say that the producers made the right decision. The director of the short film managed to expand the story in such a clever way that the viewer will sit in awe from the beginning of the story to the final credits, dreaming of a happy ending, which, however, no one can guarantee.

So, the plot of the film introduces us to Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) and Martin (Gabriel Bateman), a brother and sister who witness a paranormal presence that has taken up residence in their family home. A certain woman, who appears only in the dark, has some inexplicable plans for our heroes. And they cannot help but be frightening. At first, it seems that the ghost is incapable of causing any tangible physical harm, but it gradually becomes clear that she will not give up so easily. With each passing day, the intrusive attention of the gloomy woman becomes more and more terrifying. It is simply impossible to stop the one who hides in the darkness. The heroes cannot count on the understanding of the police, and it is better for their friends not to know about their misadventures, as young people are capable of ridiculing even their best friends. The only help Rebecca and Martin can count on is their mother Sofia (Maria Bello), who clearly knows firsthand who is stalking the peaceful family and what it could ultimately lead to.

David F. Sandberg's film plays on people's primal fear of the unknown. A simple walk down a dark hallway in a familiar apartment can scare even the bravest person. What can we say if a dark silhouette is following them! The plot of the film unfolds gradually, without unnecessary haste. During this time, we get to know the characters well and begin to worry about their fate as if they were our close friends. The actors did a great job of conveying the true horror of the situation. When you look into Teresa Palmer's frightened eyes, you realize that she is not just playing her role, but is truly experiencing emotions similar to those of her character. As always, the lovely Maria Bello was a delight. This is not her first time playing in a horror film, and it's worth mentioning that she suits roles with a slight touch of mysticism.
In conclusion, I would like to say that Lights Out is a masterfully directed, suspenseful horror film that not only scares but also intrigues. Not every horror director is capable of building a serious detective story where only good, effective “boo moments” are required. David F. Sandberg has managed to make one of the best examples of the genre, and personally, I would like him to delight us again and again with his blood-curdling works.
